Rick Hendrick has long been identified with the Chevrolet brand and with the Corvette in particular. That association has now been officially recognized with Rick’s induction into the Corvette Hall of Fame during the 21st Anniversary Celebration of the National Corvette Museum. Rick was honored for his achievements both on the racetrack and in the automotive sales and service field. These accomplishments led to Rick’s selection in the Enthusiast field as a 2015 inductee into the Corvette Hall of Fame.
Achievement on the Racetrack
During his career, Rick has earned a record-setting 12 NASCAR owner’s championships and maintains the second-place spot on the all-time NASCAR Cup winners list. Hendrick Motorsports has fielded some of the most iconic drivers in the sport of racing, including the following:
- Jeff Gordon
- Jimmie Johnson
- Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
- Terry LaBonte
- Kasey Kahne
- Ken Schrader
- Geoff Bodine
- Tim Richmond
Shrewd management, top-quality engineering and expert drivers have made Hendrick Motorsports an established force to be reckoned with in the world of NASCAR.
Rick’s Love Affair with the Iconic Corvette
In his teens, Rick enjoyed remarkable success in the local drag race scene with a 1931 Chevrolet he rebuilt and customized himself. Rick first fell in love with the Corvette when he purchased a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray convertible and restored it to its original glory. He then went on to purchase and rehabilitate more Corvettes for resale, allowing him to earn a profit while indulging his preference for these elite automobiles.
The Start of a Success Story
Rick’s achievements off the track, however, are perhaps even more impressive than his racing credentials. At the age of 26, he consolidated his financial assets to buy his first Chevrolet dealership in Bennettsville, South Carolina. Rick’s business acumen and knowledge of the Chevrolet brand allowed him to turn around this failing franchise and to increase sales sixfold. Just three years later, Rick was tapped by Chevrolet to purchase and take over City Chevrolet, an established Charlotte dealership. This investment led directly to the formation of the Hendrick Automotive Group, which now comprises over 100 dealership franchises across the country. Rick’s commitment to personal service and to delivering the most beautiful and iconic vehicles for his customers shines through in the Hendrick Automotive Group’s overall philosophy.
