A Corvette C7 ZR1 May Be Among Us
There is no denying that Corvette has been up to something big. With the major recent investments to the Corvette plant expansion to the secretive late night track testing, Corvette has been buzzing with mystery. Finally light has been shed onto the rumors with multiple sightings of Corvette’s latest project, the 2018 ZR1.
The Long Awaited 2018 ZR1
So what’s the big deal? Well, if what we’re seeing really is the 2018 Corvette C7 ZR1, it could be Corvette’s last front-engine design. Industry leaders such as Motor Authority and Car and Driver are already pegging it to become a hot collector’s item.
Corvette has always kept ZR1 reserved for their most extreme models. In fact, it hasn’t been used since 2009 when they released a supercharged 6.2 Liter V-8. A few months ago on our Rick Hendrick Facebook Page (not following us? Like Our Page) we shared information surrounding Chevrolet’s application for a new ZR1 patent. Since then we’ve been waiting, not very patiently, for new information on Corvette’s latest supercar to emerge. These sightings are exactly what we wanted.
Corvette C7 ZR1 Performance Upgrades
The first major difference on the alleged 2018 ZR1 prototype is the rear wing. Photographers have captured the vehicle both with the rear wing on and off. Other noticeable changes include the Ferrari style pentagram wheels and a honeycomb-like front mesh (Motor Authority). Car and Driver’s aerial photographs captured details such as blue-painted opposed-piston brake calipers and gaping front-fascia intercooler air intakes (Car and Driver).
While the 2018 ZR1’s engine performance is anyone’s guess, the current consensus is that the Corvette C7 ZR1 will break the 700-horsepower threshold. Many hope that it comes with a 7-speed transmission with a 10-speed automatic option. Car and Driver reminds readers that this may also be our goodbye to three pedal Corvettes, as the 2019 C8 Zora is expected to be automatic only (Car and Driver).
